Scrimmage Game: Urban Achievers @ Vikings

Nine rusty but eager ballplayers from Copenhagen took the field in Kastrup last night with the usual stench of jet airplane exhaust blowing in the air. Our shit-island rivals to the south certainly have a nice ballyard to call their own. The pillowy-soft red sand is a pleasure to dive and slide on, not to mention that expanse of green grass where outfielders can roam and run. It was chilly and breezy, with a faint dim light occasionally puncturing through the clouds.

An overzealous homeplate ump treated this scrimmage like a playoff game, setting the tone early as one of a serious competition as opposed to playful warm-up. Ringing our dudes up with a blood-curdling yowl, the ump made lots of questionable ball/strike calls and pinched our man Feebles on everything down in the zone, rendering his jazz ball somewhat ineffective.

But the Achievers showed patience and diligence at the dish. Loading the bases three times during the game, our team total of 8 walks looks most impressive. Alas without a field to call our own, without batting cages, a pitching machine or any live pitching, our bats were ill-prepared for the speed and movement of the offerings we saw.

The Achievers scratched out five hits -- three of the infield variety -- and scored three runs early in the game to take the lead, but just couldn't quite muster up enough base runners against the Viking's long reliever to tack any more runs on the board.

Defensively, we looked stiff but sure-handed. A few bad routes in the outfield and a couple tough hops on the infield was all; no errors to speak of. Feebles had his jazz ball messin' with their timing, and 3F displayed his flame-throwing form complemented by that nasty change-up. Limiting the walks, striking some fools out, and trusting in our impeccable defense looks like a purdy darn good ethos for our pitching tandem.

Nevertheless, the Vikings hit some balls hard and scored all 6 of their runs in a single frame, emerging with the victory after five-and-a-half innings.

They can have this one. We'll be more than ready to take two from 'em during the regular season.
