SEASON OPENER - May 31, 2015

double-header @ Aarhus

Pre-Game

The Achiever Nine takes the field with Feebles on the bump, Burly behind the dish

Ballyard in Aarhus looking feral, sounding surreal. Flashbacks.

Rey Hernandez - The Umpire Strikes Back

GAME 1:

Alien Prophecy -- "hit DanSAnders in the clean-up spot" (we did and he got the game-winning RBI)

Solid Defense --no errors (see highlights below)

Another Last-Inning Achiever Comeback (w/ some help from an Aarhus error)

GAME 2:

Palindromic Ambigram Lineup (1-9 becomes 9-1)

Bad Baserunning (three outs at third base, almost ran ourselves into a triple play!)

Southpaw Ace on the Rug: Jared BalaVerlander (9IP, scattered a few hits, maybe 1 walk? more than a few K's, and only 2 runs allowed).

Sloppy, but still relaxed and confident, the Achievers earned the sweep.

Highlights

After a couple innings on the mound, Feebles gets the catcher's gear on and promptly guns down two Aarhusians trying to steal 2nd base, both snatched off the dirt nicely by Pete, both throws right on the bag.

Burly misjudges a fly ball in CF but sticks with it and guns down the Aarhusian trying to stretch it into a double. Ends the inning.

Pete makes some slick fielding plays at SS in both games; one play saw him charging a high-hopper to field it on the short hop, on the run, easy throw to first, gets his man!

DanSanders doesn't see a single ball all day in RF until the second-to-last out of the double-header when a groundball basehit rolls to his shallow positioning in the outfield grass sharply enough for DanS to gun the dude down at first base!

Double-Header #2: vs. Los Amigos of Odense

Saturday, June 20th

On the first warm and sunny day of the year, nine lucky Achievers found themselves in the middle of nowhere to play that great game of baseball. No wind, no worries, but no women either.

At least two of us arrived with hangovers, but only four of us remained sober. Lukwata and his knuckler were floating somewhere in between wild drunkenness and sobriety, confounding the batsmen from Fyn for five shutout innings. The defending MVP brought the lumber this time, too, going 3 for 3, as did the newest member of the Achievers, Freddy "el diablo" Oliveira.

Once again the big-city sluggers showed their swagger at the dish: drawing walks, fouling-off tough pitches, bruising those fastballs, and bringing each other home. Throw in our penchant for base thievery and you have a recipe for certain victory.

Game 1:

Urban Achievers: 8

Odense Amigos: 0

At the break, while eating pizza and loading bowls, we watched no less than three of their players pick up and leave the premises. Apparently they had prioritized working the weekend shift at the supermarket over being outside for one of the only four goddamn baseball days scheduled this entire season. Fucking amateurs!

The Achievers didn't travel all that way just to watch their opponents lie face down in the muck and concede a walkover win. Achievers don't roll that way, yo. So we had ourselves an old-fashioned 7 vs. 7 with permanent pitcher and catcher battery. Granted, Odense had to borrow our two eldest statesmen -- Cap'n Raz and Freddy -- but that's how we roll, yo!

Lukwata continued to miss bats for the next two innings, only giving up a couple runs, before Jared balaVerlander took over for the final three innings of crafty, controlled pitching. The unofficial final result of Game 2 (Achievers 4-1 Odense) reflected a few interesting things:

-Wes and Jared can hold the Achievers to four runs on only a couple walks and a few hits over 5 innings

-The Achievers, behind Wes and Jared's pitching, can beat Wes and Jared 4-1 with our timely hitting and blazing speed on the basepaths.

Still undefeated (4-0), the Copenhagen Urban Achievers now glide into the month of July still waiting for the sun to come out again and waiting to see if Malmö has the guts to invite us over for another friendly beating.
